Once again Nancy Baldwin, Shea Lowry, and their team of Board Members, Volunteers and Staff led a group of enthusiastic children through the Summer Reading Program. This year we are delighted to acknowledge the participation and support provided by the Hilton Head Island branch of Barnes and Noble. They invited the children to visit, their staff read to the children in the store, and they gave books as prizes to provide an incentive to the children. The first set of photos below is from the 2006 program. Fifteen children qualified, each of them having read eight books. We anticipate that 20 to 25 additional children will qualify to receive a book on the field trip of August 3rd.
This years volunteers were: Nancy Baldwin, Donna Brinkley, Dennis Buckley, Jerry Coghlan, Pat Coghlan, Ella Edwards, Patrick Farrel, Bob Gregory, Alan Grogono, Anthea Grogono, Judy Hartnett, Allan LaCoe, Elizabeth Lewis, Paul and Thomas Light, Tom Loosebrock, Harry and Mary Maxon, Willam Ninabuck, Bill Raisch, Carol Rommel, Susan Schwiekert, Mel Slotnick, Brad Tufts, Ann Webster, Pete Welch, Jennifer Wessel.

In 2005, 37 children from the Hilton Head Boys & Girls Club participated in the Summer Reading Program. The children involved had just completed Kindergarten, 1st or 2nd Grade last year. Nancy Baldwin headed up a terrific group of volunteers that spent, collectively, 87 hours of one-on-one reading time with the kids. Over 330 books were read, and each child was able to improve hers/his reading skills. The Program was truly a winwin for everyone. The kids enjoyed and benefited from the Program. Even some reluctant readers became enthusiastic and, hopefully will continue to enjoy reading. The volunteers helped the kids with their reading, mentored them and we believe enjoyed themselves. Many have already agreed to participate again this fall.
The books that were used, Step Into Reading, progress from Pre-school through Level 5 and are intended for grades K-4. In order to establish a baseline, the K-1 children were started on the lowest Level and the 2nd graders were started on the next lowest Level. Among the Kindergarteners, Jesus leads the way reading 20 books. Victoria logged 16 books, the highest among 1st graders, and Monique, a 2nd grader, finished 21 books during the program.
Importantly, 78% of the children increased their reading skill at least one Level and 24% improved two or more Levels. For example Cameron, a kindergartener, read with volunteers on 13 different occasions and completed 16 books. He moved from a beginning phonics Level to almost Level 2. A 1st grader, Aisah, began reading at Level 1 but finished the program reading Level 4 books. Sakyna completed 2nd grade last year. She started at Level 2 and ended at Level 4, reading 18 books, while working with volunteers on 12 different occasions.
The Summer Reading Program was topped off with a party which included lemonade, cake and their own book to take home. Yay! You!, a new childrenıs book by Sandra Boynton was given to each child as recognition of their completion of the Program. The Staff and volunteers of the Hilton Head Boys & Girls Club are to be commended on a great program. Plans are under way to include a reading program as part of the Clubıs activities this fall.
It is a pleasure to thank the volunteers who gave their time to make this program such a success:
This year's program was made possible thanks to the generosity of members of the Board and it is a pleasure to thank them for their support.
